Etymology

This is a difficult name, but it is probable that Zachrisson (Vising Mélanges 195) was on the right track when he associated this name with Canewdon infra 179 and suggested it was from earlier Caningaege , i.e. 'island of Cana 's people' (v. eg ). This might well become Caneweye and, with the same confusion of w and v as in Kelvedon Hatch supra 58, Caneveye .
