Etymology

The original English 'foul hollow' (v. ful , pytt ) has been replaced by the more pleasant French 'fair hill' (AN  beumont ), the place being just above the marshes. The early Mod Eng forms show the natural pronunciation as in the surname Beauchamp or Beecham and in Beamond End (PN Bk 154). There seems now no trace of this. On the identification v. VCH i, 396. Berners , from Sir John Burghchier, Lord Berners (t. Hy 6Harl ).
