Etymology

Claret Hall is Clarent '1189–99 France, Claretta 1194 P, Claret , Clarettehall 1195 ib., 1225 FF, t. Hy 3, 1295 Ipm, 1327Ct , 1346 FA, Clare 1317 Ipm, Clare Hall alias Clarett Hall 1558 LancsCh. This place is just opposite Clare (Sf) on the other side of the Stour, and Professor Ekwall suggests that the name means 'little Clare' with the French et -diminutive suffix found in East Hampnett (PN Sx 67–8) and IPN 94. Such a French diminutive was specially likely to arise in the neighbourhood of the head of the great Honour of Clare.
