Etymology

'At the ash-tree(s),' v. æsc . The forms vary between the dat. sing. (æt ðǣm ) æsce and the dat. pl. (æt ðǣm ) æscum (ME  atten ashen ), the latter of which has survived. The name is identical with Ashton (PN Nth 96).
