Etymology

Soffham is Sefholm (um )1197–1210, 1249–69 Melsa. 'Meadow overgrown with sedge,' v. sef , holmr . Cf. Dan . Sivholm . Later forms of the name include Swafham 1343 Baildon, Sopham 1542MinAcct ; these adaptations arise from the fact that the family de Suafham (from Swaffham, Nf) held land in the district (1254 FF).
