Etymology

Winsetts is Winsete 1165–79 YCh 1400, Windsettes 1270 Ebor, Wynsedes 1297 LS (p), Wynnesetes 1301 Ch, Winsetts , Wynsetts 1567 FFet freq . The origin of the second element of Winsetts and Lissett infra 77 is somewhat uncertain. It may be OE  sæte 'house, seat,' OE  sæte pl. 'dwellers, inhabitants.' or OE  (ge )set 'seat, dwelling.' In an investigation of names of this type in East Anglia (ZONF iii, 200 ff.), Schram believes that most of the examples in that area are to be derived from OE  sǣte 'dwellers.' But this is by no means a certain use in the East Riding, and in all probability Winsetts is a compound of OE  wind 'wind' and either sæte or (ge )set 'dwelling,' the whole name meaning 'houses exposed to the wind,' as in Windersome infra 95.
