Etymology

'The shed place,' v. byre , st(e)all. Cf. Birstall (WRY), Birstal c. 1200 BM, Bristal 1292Nostell . Here and in several names infra 37, 41, 58, garðr is used of the enclosure in which some small religious establishment stands.
