Etymology

'Barkil 's valley,' v. dæl . The origin of Berkil is obscure but it might possibly be a shortened form of the recorded OScand  Bjǫrnkarl , a dithematic name made up of the common OScand  pers. name elements Berg - or Bjarn - (Bjǫrn -) and -ketill (-kel ). Bartin Dale is depopulated.
