Etymology

'Farm near the shore-meadows,' v. holmr , tun . The sense of holmr must here be that of 'meadow near the shore' which is found in Iceland, rather than the more common 'river-meadow': there is no stream, but Holmpton is near the sea-shore.There are traces of ODan  hulm in the first two forms and the modern pronunciation may reflect this. Cf. Introd. xxiii, xxxi.
