Etymology
'Moor settlement or estate', OE mōr + tūn. Palmes is a manorial addition derived from Bryan Palmes , a Yorkshire gentleman who married the heiress of Radclyffe of Tunstall and was attainted after the Northern rebellion in 1569 (Surtees III270).
