Etymology
'Settlement, estate at the stony place', OE *stāning + tūn. Great Stainton lies on the Roman road from Middleton St George to Durham, Margary No. 80a, and it is tempting to assume that in this name the stāning referred to a stretch of exposed Roman pavement. For this reason Ekwall proposed OE stānweg as the etymon here and for Stannington Northumberland, DEPN s.nn., as in the common place-names Stanway and Stowey. The forms for Stannington, however, Stanigton 1242, 1271, Stanington 1254, 1257, Steynington 1255, Stayngton 1270, Stanyngton 1346, like those for Stainton clearly to point to an -ing formation on stān parallel (though without i -umlaut) to such formations as *brēmling , *cærsing , marling , *þyrning etc. The ei , ay , ai spellings are ME graphies for a which remained unrounded and fell together with ai in northern dialects rather than indications of the influence of ON steinn , Jordan § 19.
