Great Stainton
Parish in the County of Durham
Etymology
The parish is composed of the townships of Elstob and Stainton, and is nearly 2,000 acres in extent, about half of which was arable in 1850, VCH III 344. Though Great Stainton was small., its name suggests that from the 14th cent. it was of greater importance than Little Stainton in the neighbouring parish of Bishopton.
