Etymology

“The parish is divided into three Constableries: 1. Stranton, including Tunstall; 2. Seaton Carrow, including Owton; and 3. Brearton”, Surtees III 121. Owton is a detached part of Greatham; West Hartlepool, a boom town of the 1840s, is treated as part of Stranton, the parish in which it developed.
