Redmarshall
Parish in the County of Durham
Etymology
Redmarshall parish comprises three townships, Carlton, Redmarshall and Stillington. Most of the land is flat between 150ˈ and 180ˈ above sea level. In Stillington the land is more varied rising to over 200ˈ. The soil is clay, suitable for wheat, oats, barley and potatoes. About 1845 there were 2,530 acres of arable, 791 acres of pasture and 38 acres of woodland. Chemical works were developed by Carlton station, VCH III 315.
