Billingham
Parish in the County of Durham
Etymology
Billingham comprises the townships of Billingham including Belasis, Cowpen Bewley, Newton Bewley and Wolviston. In 1831 the parish had an area of 8,970 acres. In 1905 some 3,106 acres were under cultivation, but the land along the Tees Haven foreshore had long been subject to tidal inundation. Billingham is the most westerly township in the parish and is separated from Norton and Stockton parishes by Billingham Beck, VCH III195.
