Etymology

Netherbury (lost), Ethemenistre Tancredi c.1226 Sarum, (prebend of) Yateminstre Netherbury , Yatemynstre Netherbury 1340, 1351 Pat, Netherbury (in ) Yatemynstre , Yatemunstre 1354 ib, 1360 Cl, Yatmystre Inferior 1388, Yatemynstre Secunda 1392 Pat, 'the second prebend and canonry of Yertmynster als. Yermyster Netherbury 1502 Pat, Yetminster Secunda , or Netherbury Inferior 1795 Boswell. This was a prebend in the cathedral of Salisbury, held by Tancred in c.1226 Sarum. Netherbury is 'the nether or lower manor', v. neoðerra , burh (ME  bury), cf. Netherbury par infra , thus distinguished from Upbury infra , v. Hutch3 4446–8. The Latin affixes inferior 'lower' and secunda 'second' are also in contradistinction to those of Upbury.
