Etymology

'Farm in or near a wood', v. wudu , widu , tūn , one of the three Do pars, so named; it is in Blackmoor Forest infra .The manorial affix is from the Glanville family, cf. Geoffrey de Gla (u )nvile 1258, 1270For , Mabel de Glamuill 1268Ass , Henry de Glaunvyle 1303 FA, etc; the surname is from Glanville in Normandy (Tengvik 89–90). The alternative affix Wolfrene -, etc, apparently in use only in the first half of the 14th cent., probably represents the well-recorded OE  fem. pers.n. Wulfrūn as suggested by Fägersten 208, although no one with this name has been noted in connection with this place, cf. DEPN s.nn. Wollerton Sa, Wolverhampton St.
