Etymology

'Farm or estate in or by the wood', from wudu, tūn , one of the three Do pars. so named, here no doubt with reference to the wood that gave name to Marshwood par. supra . The manorial affix Fitzpaine distinguishes this place from its smaller neighbour, Abbott's Wootton in Whitchurch C. par. supra : the manor was held by the family of Robert Fitz Payn from the second half of the 13th cent., hence also Wodeton Roberti (filii Pagani ), v. Hutch3 2274 and cf. Okeford Fitzpaine par. 3179 which takes its name from the same family. The short-lived affix Matravers is also manorial: this and other manors were sold to John Maltravers of Lytchett Matravers (2 29) by Robert Fitzpaine t. Ed 3 (1327–77), v. Hutch3 2274.
