Etymology

Named from R. South Winterborne, v. RNs.infra . For the possible identification of this place with one of the DB manors called Wintreburne , v. Eyton 121–2, cf. VCHDo 3147, Winterborne Came par. supra . The earlier affix Germayn , etc. is from the dedication of the former church here to St German according to Hutch1 1 439, v. St German's Church infra , but a manorial affix is also possible, cf. Philip Germeyn who held land in the nearby Wynterburn Pygace in 1280Ass (v. Winterborne Monkton par. infra ). The later affix Faryngdon , etc. is from the family of this name here in the 14th and 15th centuries: Robert de Faryndon held ¼ of a fee here in 1346 FA, cf. also John de Farendon 1348 Pat, John Faryngdon 1363 Cl, Thomas Faryngdon 1464DCMCt (the surname is from a p.n. meaning 'fern hill', v. fearn , dūn ). Even in 1774 (Hutch1 1437) it is stated that the place 'is entirely depopulated, and has been so beyond the memory of man'; according to Kelly it was destroyed in the plague of 1666. Other forms that may refer to part of this Winterborne or to one of the Winterbornes in this par. are Wynterburn (e ) Gaugy 1268 FF, 1312 Ass, Wynterburn (e ) Gauge 1329 FF, named from Richard Gaugy , Thomas Gaugy 1268 ib.
