Etymology
Cripton Barn, Cripton Spinney, Cripton Wd (SY 702868), Cribbeton 1457Ct , Cribton , Crybton 1460ib , 1464DCMCt , 1465Weld 1et freq to 1502Eton , Kribton , Krybton 1461Ct , Crypp (e )ton , Crypton 1530Weld 1, Cripton 1543ib , Cripton als. Winterburne Billett 1637DCMSurv , Cripton farme 1648 SC et passim , Crippen 1682Weld 1, cf. Gupton Hill (for Cripton Hill ) 1843TA . The first el. is probably ME cribbe (< OE crib (b )) 'a manger, an oxstall', the second is tūn ; the meaning of the compound may be 'farmstead with a crib, cattle farm', cf. Barnes 105 s.v. stall 'a cowstall or cribhouse'. The alias form from 1637 shows that Cripton was a (later) alternative name for Winterborne Belet infra (cf. Hutch3 2289, Eyton 121–2, VCHDo 3113, 147); in fact the tithing in Culliford Tree hundred called Cripton in 1664 HTax and Cripton & Farringdon in 1795 Boswell is almost certainly identical with that called Wynterborne Belet in 1332 SR and Hundyngtone in 1327SR , v. foll., Winterborne Farringdon and Winterborne Hundyngton infra .
