Etymology

Hambury Ho, Hambury Tout (SY 816803), Hambury Down 1843TA , Hanbrey Downe ElizRent , Hanbury 1597 Hutch3, Hanbury Farme 1664 HTax, Hanbrow 1705Weld 1, Hamborough 1589 Hutch3, 1640, 1686Weld 1, Hambrough 1646 SC, Hambury-taut , or toote 1790 Hutch3, Holcombe , or Hamburgh (a farm )1795 Boswell, possibly 'high hill or barrow', v. hēah (wk.obl. hēan ), beorg , with reference either to Hambury Tout itself (a high rounded hill above the cliff rising to 454′, v. tōt(e) 'a look-out'), or to the tumulus on its summit (RCHM 2446), v. also dūn ; the second el. has of course been replaced by burh (dat.sg. byrig ). Holcombe , the alternative name for the farm, is 'grange and farm of Holcomb '1541 Hutch3, 1597 ib, 'hollow valley', v. hol 2 , cumb , which aptly describes the valley in which the present Hambury Ho is situated, cf. Holcombe in Alton P. par. infra .
