Etymology

Little Bindon (SY 831798), Little Bindon 1589 Hutch3, 1774 Hutch1, Binedon , 'the place of Bynedon , where the abbey was first begun '1234 (1279) Ch, 'the place of Old Bynedonwhere the abbey was first built '1279 ib, Haldebynedon 1335 DoNHAS 5515, Byndoun 1399 Cl, Lit (t )le Byndon , Lit (t )le Bindon 1535 VE, ElizRent , mannor of parva Byndon 1586Weld 1, the Lodge and Warren called parva Byndon 1686ib , parva Byndon 1578 (17) Pitt , cf. Bindon Warren 1703Weld 1, '(place) within the hill', from binnan and dūn , with reference to Bindon Hill, 1811 OS, with loge and wareine . This was the site of the original foundation of Bindon Abbey c. 1150 before it was transferred to Wool in 1172 (Hutch3 1350, VCHDo 282, RCHM 2151); Old - and Little - therefore distinguish it from Bindon Abbey & Fm in Wool par. infra where earlier spellings for the name are to be found, v. ald , lȳtel . Little Bindon itself was erected in the 13th cent., the E part forming a chapel (RCHM 2151) which was 'converted into a warren-house' (Hutch1 1163).
