Etymology

'Tola's manor on R. Piddle', cf. Affpuddle par. supra . Tola (< ODan  Tola ), widow of Urc , Edward the Confessor's huscarl , got Edward's permission between 1058 and 1066 to give her lands to Abbotsbury abbey (ASWrits 2, Sawyer 1064, cf. Fees 92); Tolpuddle belonged to Abbotsbury abbey in 1086 DB (VCHDo 380). Tolleton 1268Ass ('Tola's farm', v. tūn ) is probably an alternative name for Tolpuddle but may be a separate place somewhere in this neighbourhood.
