Etymology

'Hill or barrow of a man called Sigemund', from the OE  pers.n. Sigemund and beorg, cf. the analogous Simons Barrow PN D 617. The precise reference is uncertain: there are round barrows in the par., and the village is situated between two hills. The second el. shows confusion with bury from OE  burh 'stronghold', cf. Stoborough 173, Charborough 259. The name of the stream flowing to the E of the village, R. Simene, is a back-formation from Symondsbury, v. RNs.infra ; the original name of the stream may be preserved in the p.n. Atrim, partly in Netherbury par. supra and partly in this par. infra .
