Great Ebb

Early-attested site in the Parish of Symondsbury

Historical Forms

  • Hebbe 1329 Ipm

Etymology

Great Ebb (SY 438911), probably to be identified with Hebbe 1329 Ipm. This is a pointed promontory of shingle, exposed at low tide, just E of East Ebb Cove in Chideock par. supra , v. ebba 'ebb, low tide'. As noted by Fägersten 292, the word here seems to have the later dial. sense of 'foreshore, the part between high and low water' (EDD s.v. ebb sb. sense 3), cf. the analogous Long Ebb in Tyneham par. 1 105.
