Etymology

Chardown Hill (SY 397935), Chardown Hill 1769DCMMap , Churndown (sic)c.1300 (15) Poul , le Charne Downe 1525AOMB , from R. Char (Cerne ) and dūn , v. RNs.infra . This 600′ hill in the N of the par. overlooks the Char valley, cf. an apparently identical (but lost) name Cernedun on the other side of the valley in Catherston Lew. par. supra (f.ns. (b)).
