Etymology

'Sandy ford', v. sand , ford ; the ford was where the road from Sherborne crosses the stream now called Mill Stream. The affix is manorial, from the family which held the manor from the 12th cent. (Helye Oriescuilz 1177 P, Richard Dorescuilz 1195 P, Richard Orescuilz 1210 P), cf. Stourpaine 2116 and Reaney OES 291.
