'South farm', v. sūð , tūn ; Sutton Poyntz was a royal manor in DB and 'south' may refer to its situation in relation to Dorchester, but cf. Eston supra and Weston infra which may be much older than their recorded spellings indicate. The manor was held by the family of Poyntz from the 13th cent.
