Etymology

Fortuneswell (SY 686735), Fortuneswell 1795 Boswell, Fortunes Well 1608LRMB , probably 'lucky well or spring', or 'well or spring in which fortunes could be told', from ModE  fortune and wella , cf. Fritwell O 211 and Elwell in Upwey par. infra for names of similar meaning; in 1608LRMB it was described as 'a place to pen in cattle'.
