Etymology

'Mill stream', v. myln , burna , cf. Milborne St Andrew par. infra which takes its name from the same stream and where some of the forms without affix cited above may strictly belong. There was a mill at one of the two DB manors of Milborne S. in 1086 (VCHDo 3112).The affixes Munketon and Beek , Bek (e ) are from its possession by the abbey of Bec-Hellouin (Hutch3 1141), cf. Beklond in Steeple par. supra , v. munuc , tūn ; Little is in relation to Milborne St A., v. lȳtel ; Styl (e )(h )am may be from stigel 'a stile, a steep ascent' and hamm 'enclosure', cf. William de la Stig (h )ele 1268Ass , 1285 FA mentioned under Barrow hundred. Another name for this Milborne or for a part of it was Mel (l )eb (o )urneford (e )1280, 1288Ass , v. ford , but cf. Milborne Mamford in Milborne St A. par. infra .
