Etymology

'Manor or estate (on R. Frome) of the Croc family', cf. the form cited from 1177–8 P and William Croc 1195, 1205 ib, 1227 FF, John Croc ib, v. tūn , RNs. infra . For the identification of the DB form, v. VCHDo 393.This is one of the several post-Conquest tūn-names in Dorset, v. IPN 131. For the ME  surname Croc (ultimately from the ON  pers.n. Krókr , ODan  Krōk ), cf. also Thomas Crouk ' (Sydling St N.) and Crok ' (E & W Chelborough) both 1332 SR. The division of the manor noted in 1774 Hutch1 1519, 1863 Hutch3 2685, distinguishes Crookston -Higher , or Henning 's Crookston from Crookston -Lower , or Channing 's Crookston : the former is the western moiety of the manor allotted to John Henning in 1592 Hutch3ib, the latter is the eastern moiety of the manor sold to Richard Channing in 1654 ib. Cf. also East Cruxton Farm and West Cruxton Farm 1837TA . There is mention of a mill at Cruxton in 1086 DB (VCHDo 393), cf. John Mulewarde ('mill-keeper, miller') de Croukeston 1395Ilch .
