Etymology

'hazel wood', from hæsel and bearu , identical in origin with Haselbury Plucknett So (DEPN). Guy de Bryene was here in 1361 FF, 1388 Cl, cf. Alice de Briene 1393MinAcct (the surname is from Brienne in France). It is on the edges of Blackmoor Vale infra , cf. also Stoke Wake par. infra . Eyton 131–2 (tentatively followed by VCHDo 3 93) identifies the DB manor of Poleham (f. 81b) held by William de Moyon with Haselbury Bryan, but for the identifi- cation of this form with East Pulham, v. DBGazetteer 120, Pulham par. infra .
