Etymology

Crockern Stoke (lost), Crokkernestoke , Sto (c )k (e ) et Crockkern ', Sto (c )k (e ) et Crokkern '14 GlastF, Crockernestock by Haselbere 1333 Pat, Crockerne Stocke et Turberville 1346AddCh , Cro (c )kern (e )stoke 1349 Hutch3, 1385 FF, 1435 IpmR, Crokkernstokke 1386 FF; Crokkere Stokke , Crokkerestok (k )e 1308 Ipm, 1340, 1370 FF, 1441 Pat, Stock Crokeres 1315 Drew, Cro (c )ker (e )sto (c )k 1318, 1361 FF, Stokkecrokkere 1340 NI, v. stoc 'secondary settlement', cf. foll.and the adjacent par. of Stoke Wake infra . The first part of the name is probably 'house where crocks or pots are made', from crocc and ærn , cf. Crockern Tor D 193, Crockernwell ib 428 and the synonymous Potterne in Verwood par. infra . An alternative though less likely explanation, as noted by Fägersten 55 note 1, is that it is from croccere 'a potter' in a ME  wk.gen.pl. form with -ene , v. -ena , cf. Buckhorn Weston par. infra . The -s in the form Stock Crokeres may be a pl. or be due to metanalysis. The -Sto (c )ke of this name and foll. may be preserved in Stockfield Fm infra (at ST 755090) as suggested by Fägersten 55; Crockern Stoke is included under Lydlinch par., though for no apparent good reason, by Hutch3 4 191. The form Stokke iuxta Fyffhude 14Cecil may belong here or under foll., cf. Fifehead Neville par. supra .
