Etymology

Probably 'ford at the stone', from hān and ford , as suggested by Ekwall DEPN: hēah (wk.obl. hēan ) 'high, chief' is a less likely first el. in view of the absence of Hen - spellings (apart from the form Enforde ), cf. Six. Handley par. infra . The site of the original ford was perhaps where the track called Holloway Lane in Shillingstone par. supra crosses R. Stour towards Hanford Ho and where a ford is still marked 6″; two of the fields near this ford are in fact called Hanfords Ford 1828TA (Shillingstone). There were two mills at Hanford in 1086 DB (VCHDo 384), cf. also 'the mill of Hamford '1242 Ch.
