Etymology

One of four Do pars. named from R. Frome, v. RNs.infra . Originally 'little estate on R. Frome', v. lȳtel , parva ; as late as 1939 Kelly, the entry for this par. reads 'Frome Saint Quintin (or Little Frome)'. The affix St Quintin is manorial: the manor was held by Richard de St Quintin in 1174 Hutch3 (2 643) and by Herbert de St Quintin (de Sancto Quintino ) in 1286 Ch, 1288Ass , 1303 Hutch3 (ib), cf. also Herbert de Sancto Quintino , Robert de Sancto Quintino , Quyntino 1327 SR. The same family (from one of the places called St Quentin in France, v. Tengvik 113) gave its name to Fifehead St Quintin in Fifehead Neville par. 2 95–6.
