Etymology

An unparalleled simplex use of OE  folc 'folk, the people of a tribe or family, the common people', presumably denoting 'land held by the people', cf. Freefolk Ha (DEPN).The 12th cent. u spellings are probably AN, the second form perhaps suggesting confusion with Fulking Sx 284.
