Etymology

Named from their situation on R. Stour, v. RNs.infra .The affixes Estouere and Westouere mean 'east bank' and 'west bank' respectively, v. ēast , west , ōfer 1 , cf. Langport So which has identical affixes -Estover , -Westover in 1472 Pat. The other affixes (Cosin and Wake ) are manorial.William Cusin is mentioned in connection with (E) Stour in Hy 3 (14) Cerne (Boscum Willelmi Cusin , scilicet de Stures ), and Ralph Wake is associated with (E and W) Stour in 1285 FA, 1290 Ch, 1304 Pat, also Andrew Wake in 1270For , cf. Stoke Wake par. infra for these same two families. The form Stowers in 1576HaRO denotes 'the two places called Stower '; -s in the earlier spellings is no doubt a similar use of the pl. form.
