Etymology

Cogdean Elms (SY 993980), Cogdean Elm (e )s 1774 Hutch1, named from Kocdene 1249 FF, vill ' de Kocdene 1280Ass , Cokkeden (e )1280ib , 1374MinAcct , Cogden (e )1288Ass , Cokeden (e )1455 Cl, Cokden 1463MinAcct , Cogdean 1774 Hutch1, cf. Cogdean (Lane ) Cl 1839TA , probably 'cocks' valley', from cocc 2 (gen.pl. cocca ) and denu ; it gives name to Cogdean hundred supra , the court of which was formerly held here (as in 1249 FF and 1463MinAcct ). The valley (part of it now called Happy Bottom infra ) extends NE and is crossed by a N-S Roman road (Margary 4d). Anderson 129 suggests that the 'cocks' may have been waterfowl, since these frequent the marshy valley bottom. There were 'some large elms' here in 1774 (Hutch1 2129), v. elm .
