Etymology

This name is obscure. It has been compared with Buckerell D 610 (Bucherel 1165, Bokerel c. 1200, Bukerell 1221), Chackrell D 548 (Chakerell 13), Cheverell W 238 (Chevrel 1086, Cheverel (le ) 1166, Chiverell 1175), and R. Petteril Cu 23, RN 323 (cf. DEPN) (Peterel , Petrell 1268, Peyterel 1285), but none of these names have been satisfactorily explained, cf. also the f.n. Chickerell (Chiterell , Chyterell 1439, Chitterell 1615) in W Stafford par. infra .
