Etymology

Ford Coppice & Ford Fm, Fordwater (ST 316025), la Forde 1537Digby , Forde 1601DCMCt , Ford 1647HarlCh , Fordwater 1811 OS, Ford Water 1842TAMap , cf. Fordelese 1405Salis , 1423AddRoll , Fordelez 1537Digby , Ford (e )mede 1423, 1424AddRoll , Ford Mdw 1839TA , '(place at) the ford', v. ford , wæter , lǣs , mǣd . William atte Water 1423AddRoll , 1427Salis , may also belong here. The ford in question was a crossing of the unnamed stream, flowing S from Chardstock, by the Ilminster- Axminster Roman road ('Fosse Way'); it is no doubt to be identified with Stratforde 1414 Cl, 'ford on a Roman road', v. strǣt .
