Etymology
For Caundle, v. Stourton Caundle par. supra . Marsh is OE mersc 'marsh', alternating in the early forms with the synonymous ME (< OFr mareis; two 14th cent forms contain tūn 'estate', cf. the TA f.n. Maston infra . Some of the simplex forms may denote the original area of marshland within the par. rather than the par. itself, cf. la Mersshe in parochia de la Mersshe 1373DCMDeed . The earliest mention of this marsh is in the surname of John de la Merse who is associated with Candel in 1244Ass (200.9). The marsh was probably the area of the present par. which until 1886 formed a detached part of Bps. Caundle par. supra (cf. Mershe Caundell ' Episcopi 1515) and which, together with another detached part of Bps. Caundle now in Folke, formed the tithing of Down (e ) and Marsh 1664 HTax, 1795 Boswell, v. Bishop's Down in Folke par. infra .
