Etymology

Dudley Moor (lost, near Inpark Fm infra ), Dudley Moor 1774 Hutch1, 1870 Hutch3, probably to be identified with 'hide of land in Dudelesheia '1206 RC, Dudleshey 1268 FF, Doudeleshegh 1310 Inq aqd, 1311 Pat, (camp ' de ) Dudelesheye 1317MiltC , 'Dud(d)el's enclosure', from the OE  pers.n. Dud (d )el (Redin 140) and (ge)hæg, then with the later addition of mōr , cf. Duddeleston '14 (16) Winch mentioned in the bounds of Sydling St N. par. infra . The pers.n. gives rise to a ME  surname evidenced in Do, e.g. Richard Duddel (Broadmaine), Joan Dodeles (Affpuddle) 1327 SR, and it is possible that the p.n. contains an early instance of the surname. It is perhaps less likely that the first el. here is the topographical term suggested for Duddle Fm 1317. According to Hutch3 410 this place 'belongs to Inn Park' (v. Inpark Fm infra ), and its location can be established with reference to the fns. Hr Dudley Moor & Lr Dudley Moor , Dudley More Four Acres 1839TA .
