Etymology

Stratford (lost), vill ' de Startford , Stratteford 1280Ass , 'water-mill at Stratford '1347 Ipm, molend ' de Stratforde 1374, molend ' de Strafford 1463MinAcct , 'ford on a Roman road', v. strǣt , ford . The ford was possibly where the Roman road from Badbury to Poole Harbour (Margary 4d) crossed R. Stour or its tributary (v. Lake Fm supra ) near the NW corner of Canford Magna par. at SY 993998 or 996991.
