Etymology

Ashington (SZ 002984), Ashington 1822EnclA , Esseton 1242–3 Fees, Ashamton 1327SR (p), Asshton 1463MinAcct (p), cf. Ashenton Bridge 1791 Boswell, probably 'farm of the Æschǣme ' ('dwellers by the ash-tree'), v. æsc , hǣme (gen.pl. hǣma ), tūn , cf. Bockhampton in Stinsford 1367. The two forms dated 1396 and 1415 given in Fägersten 110 probably belong under Ashton in Winterborne St M. par. 1 375.
