Etymology

'Maple-tree farm', v. mapuldor , tūn , cf. Mapperton par. infra . On the doubtful identification of DB Mapertune (ExonMapertona ) (½ hide here was an outlying member of the manor of Puddletown), v. Eyton 118 fn., VCHDo 3 66. The 15th cent, affixes -Filoll and -Bonevyle are from the families of Hugh Fyllole 14Wim , William Filloil 1335ib , John Filiol 1406 Hutch3 3495, and John Bonvil 1397 ib 3344, cf. Bonville's in Sturminster M. par. supra and furlong voc ' Bonesyfylye , Bonevyle 1426Midd . The bounds of Mapperton are given in 943 (15) ShaftR (S 490)v. par. name supra , Forsberg 205, cf.
