Etymology

'West farm,' with reference perhaps to Egg Buckland to the east and Sutton to the south. The Peverel family, which is first mentioned in connexion with the place in 1228 (FF), was probably a branch of the family of Hugo Pyperellus who held the East Devon manor of Sampford Peverel infra 551.
