Etymology

The first element here is not uncommon in Devon names, v. infra 667. In field-names we find also Manne mede 1509, Mannemede 1452Ct , Meneweye 1368 IpmR and Little Menepark 1691Deed , all in Devon. Outside the county may be noted on gemanan hylle BCS 670 (So), to mænan leage BCS 622, 731 (Ha), to mæne lege BCS 1119 (So), Menemede t. Hy 7Rental (Wt), la Menewode c. 1265 (Ha), on þone gemænen þorn KCD 783 (Ha) and Menmarsh (O) 1278 RH Menemers . All these names contain the OE  (ge )mǣne , 'common,' 'general,' and may refer either to some natural feature belonging to the whole village or community, or possibly in some cases to some particular object marking the boundary between two or more estates.
