Lewdon

Early-attested site in the Parish of Thelbridge

Etymology

The first element is probably OE  hlēow , 'shelter, protection,' or the corresponding adjective hlēow postulated in the NED as the source of the adjective lew , 'warm, sunny, sheltered.' Cf. also Leeford supra 59, and Lewdon infra 428. The farm lies on the slope of a down facing south.
