Etymology

This name may, as suggested by Blomé (98), go back to an OE  syle-ford -tun , 'farm by the miry ford.' Alternatively the first element may be a stream-name. Cf. Little Silver supra 358, though this would leave the almost persistent medial f unexplained. Cf., however, Alphington supra 422. There is a small stream which rises near here and joins the Culm. v. Addenda, Part ii, xiv.
