Etymology

The name is probably identical with Ditcheat (So), Dichesgate , Dichesyate 842 BCS 468, Dicesget 1086 DB, Dichesieta 12th HMC x App. 3, 14, t. Hy 2 Wells i, 26. The latter is clearly a compound of OE  dic and geat with reference to the Roman road from Ilchester to Bath; the significance in this case is unknown. It should be noted that there was another dicesget not far from this one, which is mentioned in the great Crediton Charter (BCS 1331).
